Biodiesel for Green Cars

The worldwide combat against air pollution and global warming has led to the invention of environment-friendly vehicles known as green cars. This special type of automobile makes use of biodiesel instead of the traditional gasoline. But what is biodiesel? What are the benefits it brings to the environment?

Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel produced from domestic and biodegradable resources. Often, it is made from soy beans, waste vegetable oil (cooking oil), animal fat, or recycled grease; used as a fuel blend with standard diesel. Several plants can also be transformed into biodiesel such as, among othes, mustard, rapeseed (canola), palm, olive, peanut, soy bean, safflower, sunflower and castor. Biodiesel is produced through a chemical process called "esterificiation" that converts the oil into a fatty-acid methyl-ester fuel (biodiesel). Among the notable features of biodiesel is that it is "non-toxic." Since biodiesel cars release less engine emissions, you contribute in solving global warming and CO2 burden. Biodiesel also has a much higher lubricity than petroleum diesel which can prolong engine life.

Most diesel engines can run on biodiesel without needing any special equipment. However, there are types of biodiesel that require engine modification before using it. Ester-based biodiesel degrades rubber products. Engine parts and equipment with rubber seals and piping are replaced with non-rubber alternatives. If you are interested in using biodiesel in your auto, better consult first your car manufacturer first. Converting your car to run on biodiesel should be done by auto professionals. Mistakes in engine conversion can be very expensive to rectify.
